The flood hazards depicted in this site are the product of flood simulations using Flo2d, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-approved flood routing application software. The inundation maps were simulated using rainfall delivered by tropical storm Ondoy on 26 September 2009 over 3 arc second topography from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). The rainfall event is considered as an extreme event that can generate floods with a 100-150 year return period.

These hazard maps are indicative inundation maps for large flood events and useful only for knowing where not to be during extremely heavy rainfall. For local governments, these flood hazard maps can be used for localized emergency response (i.e. evacuation and access routes, road closures, siting of key rescue facilities) and for urban planning. It should not be used for insurance and bank appraisal purposes.

These hazard maps are only as good as the topographic map base that was used in the flood simulation. Detailed and more accurate flood hazard maps of any city can be conducted upon request to the National Institute of Geological Sciences, University of the Philippines Flo2d simulation team (email us).

Tens of thousands of residents in China’s southern Guandong Province gathered in the streets yesterday, occupying a highway to demonstrate against the development of a new coal plant near Shantou city. The residents say existing coal plants in the area are fouling local air and water, and are making people sick.

Each year, protests spring up to counter the construction of dirty coal plants. But this appears to be the biggest yet. Officials now say they will abandon plans to build a new coal plant in the area.Two people were reportedly killed in clashes with police, but the government is denying those reports.

Every National Academy of Science has confirmed the existence of climate change:

“As part of its most comprehensive study of climate change to date, the National Research Council today issued three reports emphasizing why the U.S. should act now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and develop a national strategy to adapt to the inevitable impacts of climate change. The reports by the Research Council, the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering, are part of a congressionally requested suite of five studies known as America's Climate Choices.”

"These reports show that the state of climate change science is strong," said Ralph J. Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences. "But the nation also needs the scientific community to expand upon its understanding of why climate change is happening, and focus also on when and where the most severe impacts will occur and what we can do to respond."

It’s time for deniers to drop their phony excuses and get to work finding a solution to the climate crisis.

Barclays, the Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC are among the top banks that have lent billions of euros to the coal sector – despite their much-vaunted environmental credentials, a new investigation has found.

Financing coal is controversial, because it is the dirtiest fossil fuel and responsible for billions of tonnes of emissions of carbon dioxide globally, as well as other pollutants such as soot particles and mercury.

The list of top 20 institutions that have financed coal-mining and coal-fired energy generation reads like a roll-call of the world's biggest banks, with three American banks – JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America – topping the list. Between them, these three have provided at least €42bn to the coal sector since 2005.

Barclays took fifth place, having lent more than €11.5bn to big coal companies in the last seven years, while RBS came in seventh having lent or raised finance amounting to nearly €11bn over the period. HSBC just scraped into the top 20, with €4.4bn of finance.

The research was compiled by a group of NGOs, including German environmental group Urgewald, the international network BankTrack and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg. It took experts more than seven months to uncover the data, because banks do not declare it publicly – many banks do not know how much they lend or raise finance to the coal sector, or how many shares or other assets they own in coal. The figures were found by examining the public reports of the biggest coal mining and coal-fired power generation companies, and the true finance figures are likely to be much higher.

The NGOs have labelled the banks "climate killers" because their financing efforts have helped to expand coal in the past decade. Many of the banks on the list subscribe to environmental principles, such as cutting their own greenhouse gas emissions and conducting environmental impact assessments on projects they finance.

Heffa Schücking of Urgewald said: "We chose to look into coal financing as coal-fired power plants are the biggest source of man-made carbon dioxide emissions and the major culprit in climate change. In spite of the fact that climate change is already having impacts on the most vulnerable societies, there is an abundance of plans to build new coal-fired power plants."

Shücking said shareholders in the listed banks should be concerned, because financing dirty fuels was increasingly risky in the face of the growing threat of climate change, and increasing moves to limit greenhouse gas emissions under national regulations.

She added: "If banks provide money for these projects, they will wreck all attempts to limit global warming to 2C [which scientists regard as the limit of safety]."

The figures include bank lending to coal companies, equity financing raising for the companies, and other sources of financing such as bond issues, as well as coal assets owned by the banks – including physical assets such as coal mines or power plants, and shares in coal companies. The researchers examined the annual reports of coal companies making up 44% of global coal production, and 51% of global coal-fired energy generation, between 2005 and September 2011.

Several banks told the Guardian they did not track how much they lent to the coal sector, and that such lending did not affect their environmental commitments.

RBS said: "Since 2006, RBS has lent more money to wind power projects than to any other type of energy project. Just as society as a whole has to make a transition to renewable energy sources, so will the banks that fund energy production. RBS has been one of the most active banks in the world in funding renewable energy so we are at the forefront of helping finance that transition."

Mary Church, campaigner at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: "Since the bailout in 2008, it's taxpayers' money that RBS has been investing in this devastating industry."

Duterte makes turnabout, now questions proposed coal-fired power plant

DAVAO City, Philippines—Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who had been a strong endorser of a coal-fired power plant that Aboitiz Power Corp. plans to erect in the Toril district here, says he now has apprehensions about the project after learning that the plant will require a lot of fresh water.

“I was made to understand that they will be using sea water,” Duterte told reporters Thursday.

Duterte said he learned only recently that Aboitiz would be drawing fresh ground water to run the power plant and not sea water as he had been made to believe.

The plant is to be located in Toril’s Binugao area, which sits on one of the city’s known aquifers.

Duterte said his fear about the loss of fresh water in Binugao was the same reason he ordered the suspension of a city council resolution approving the reclassification of the area, including the site of the proposed 300-megawatt plant, into an industrial zone.

Binugao is currently classified as a protected medium industrial and protected open space easement.

“I am sorry to delay the project but there are things that need to be addressed,” Duterte said.

Duterte said his previous strong support for the project was anchored on the belief that it would help solve an impending power crisis.

“But it’s a different matter when the fresh water of Davao will… be compromised,” he said.

Based on Aboitiz data, the coal-fired plant will need more than half a million cubic meters of water per year to cool down its generators.

Duterte said the problem was that Aboitiz never said it would bore wells to draw ground water for its needs.

“This is fresh water we are talking about,” he said. “This is a supply that is intended for the next-generation Dabawenyos.”

Manuel Orig, Aboitiz first vice president for Mindanao affairs, said they would discuss the issue with Duterte and the city council.

The Network Opposed to Coal (No to Coal-Davao) said it was happy about Duterte’s turnaround.

“Thank you, Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for taking up the issue of water that will be used by the coal-fired power plant in Binugao. I promise you that one day soon you will also find that the drinking water sources will be contaminated with mercury, arsenic, molybdenum, cadmium, manganese, etc…” said Dr. Jean Lindo, No to Coal convenor.

(MAPLETON, IA) It's been more than 2 weeks since a tornado ripped through the town of Mapleton, Iowa.

The massive clean up effort continues today, and the town is pulling through, thanks, in no small part, to a strong community.

All the streets in town are clear, but clean up continues and there's still a lot to do.

"It just boggles your mind, the amount of cleanup that there is yet to do," says Colleen Sulsberger, an In-Kind Donation Coordinator in Mapleton.

After an EF-3 tornado tore through Mapleton on April 9, the clean up effort is still well underway, and what's been done is much to the credit of a massive amount of volunteers.

"It's overwhelming. We're all moved to tears by the outpouring of support and help from people," says Sulsberger.

Students have been a driving force behind community rehabilitation, the young group has logged more than 15,000 volunteer hours so far.

The effort is piling up, there's an estimated 200 tons of storm debris west of town, with more still on the ground.

Most of the debris is from houses that are red tagged and uninhabitable, nearly 200 former homes have been marked.

"Homeless people, people that need housing, is no longer a face on the TV in some big city, these are families now that they know, that we're trying to find housing for," says Sulsberger.

It's a community that came face to face with disaster, and is pulling through; rebuilding and growing stronger.

"God brings good things from tragedy, brings people together, and that's, it's just great to live in the Midwest when something like this happens," says Sulsberger.

Donations are still needed, officials say the best ideas right now are gift cards and monetary donations.

The government pitching in to help with the cleanup.

Governor Terry Branstad launched an individual disaster assistance grant program, Monday.

The program covers Monona, Buena Vista, Pocahontas and Sac counties.

It provides up to $5,000 for households that qualify, the money is aimed to help residents get jump started on the road to recovery.

Residents can go to the Department of Human Services web site to get more information on the program.

On May 21, a small system of thunderstorms began to develop in Brown County, Kansas. At the same time, another system formed to the southeast of Emporia, Kansas. The Brown county system developed into a tornado over Shawnee County, Kansas and touched down over Topeka, Kansas for several seconds causing minor damage nearby. Meanwhile the Emporia system continued to move to the northeast, where an EF3 tornado heavily damaged the town of Reading, Kansas. One person was killed there, several others were injured and at least 20 houses were destroyed.^[57] After hitting Topeka it hit several towns including Oskaloosa, Kansas, doing extensive damage to that community. Several other tornadoes touched down in the region that evening.^[58]

A moderate risk of severe weather was issued for much of the Midwest south to Oklahoma for May 22. The first tornadic supercell that day developed in the mid-afternoon hours over the western Twin Cities with a swath of damage, especially in and around Minneapolis, Minnesota.^[59] An intense tornado also tracked towards Harmony, Minnesota that afternoon and a tornado emergency was issued. Late that afternoon, at about 5:15 pm CDT (2215 UTC), a very large and intense multiple-vortex tornado resulted in catastrophic damage in Joplin, Missouri. Many houses and businesses were flattened and some even were blown away in Joplin, the main hospital was heavily damaged and many people were reported to have been trapped in destroyed houses. The Weather Channel video showed entire communities flattened. Early reports suggest there were at least 116 fatalities.^[60]

There has been a huge amount written about the decline of the honeybee, Apis
mellifera , but relatively scant attention has been paid to other important
pollinators that have also been affected simultaneously, in particular, the
bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, which has been experiencing a precipitous global
decline. The bumble bee, an important pollinator, has received much less
attention than the honeybee because the bumblebee does not produce marketable
quantities of honey.

Is the bumblebee doomed?

As early as six years ago, there was clear evidence that the bumblebee was in
deep trouble in North America. A survey of bumblebee species reached the
following conclusion [1]: “The bumblebee subgenus Bombus is represented by five
species in North America. Of these, one, B. franklini, may be extinct, and two
others, the western B. occidentalis and the eastern B. affinis, appear to be in
steep decline. For all of these species, habitat loss and degradation and
extensive pesticide use are threats faced daily. However, circumstantial
evidence indicates that the principal cause for these population declines is the
introduction of exotic disease organisms and pathogens via trafficking in
commercial bumblebee queens and colonies for greenhouse pollination of
tomatoes.”

In 2009 the decline in Midwestern North American bumblebee was documented and
large scale agricultural intensification implicated as the cause [2]. A 2010
report showed that the relative abundances of four species have declined by up
to 96 percent and that their geographic ranges contracted by 23–87 percent
within the last 20 years [3]. It also showed that declining populations have
significantly higher infection levels of the microsporidian pathogen Nosema
bombi and lower genetic diversity compared with co-occurring populations of the
stable (non-declining) species. It concluded [3]: “Higher pathogen prevalence
and reduced genetic diversity are, thus, realistic predictors of these alarming
patterns of decline in North America, although cause and effect remain
uncertain.”

A number of causes have been put forward for the decline of the bumble bee,
these include intensification of land use, introduction of pathogen-bearing
bees, pathogens from honey bees, inbreeding, and exposure to pesticides. Before
discussing those causes, I describe the lifestyle of the bumblebee.

Lifestyle of the bumble bee

The bumblebee may look like a large economy-sized honeybee, but it has a
distinctly different lifestyle [4]. Most species live in small colonies, usually
underground, often in an old mouse hole. The queen lays her eggs in a hollow
nest of moss or grass at the beginning of the season. The larvae are fed on
pollen and honey, and develop into workers. All the bees die at the end of the
season except fertilized females, which hibernate and produce fresh colonies in
the spring. Bumblebees form colonies. These colonies are usually much less
extensive than those of honeybees. This is due to a number of factors including:
the small physical size of the nest cavity, a single female is responsible for
the initial construction and reproduction that happens within the nest; and the
restriction of the colony to a single season (in most species). Often, mature
bumblebee nests will hold fewer than 50 individuals. Bumblebee nests may be
found within tunnels in the ground made by other animals, or in tussock grass.
Bumblebees sometimes construct a wax canopy (“involucrum”) over the top of their
nest for protection and insulation. Bumblebees do not often preserve their nests
through the winter, though some tropical species live in their nests for several
years (and their colonies can grow quite large, depending on the size of the
nest cavity). In temperate species, the last generation of summer includes a
number of queens that overwinter separately in protected spots.

The queens can live up to one year, possibly longer in tropical species.
Bumblebee nests are first constructed by over-wintered queens in the spring (in
temperate areas). Upon emerging from hibernation, the queen collects pollen and
nectar from flowers and searches for a suitable nest site. The characteristics
of the nest site vary among bumblebee species, with some species preferring to
nest in underground holes and others in tussock grass or directly on the ground.
Once the queen has found a site, she prepares wax pots to store food, and wax
cells into which eggs are laid. These eggs then hatch into larvae, which cause
the wax cells to expand isometrically into a clump of brood cells.

After the first or second group of workers emerge, they take over the task of
foraging and the queen spends most of her time laying eggs and caring for
larvae. The colony grows progressively larger and at some point will begin to
produce males and new queens. The point at which this occurs varies among
species and is heavily dependent on resource availability and other
environmental factors. Unlike the workers of more advanced social insects,
bumblebee workers are not reproductively sterile and are able to lay haploid
eggs (with one set of chromosomes) that develop into viable male bumble bees.
Only fertilized queens can lay diploid eggs (with two sets of chromosomes) that
mature into workers and new queens. New queens and males leave the colony after
maturation. Males in particular are forcibly driven out by the workers. Away
from the colony, the new queens and males live off nectar and pollen and spend
the night on flowers or in holes. The queens are eventually mated, often more
than once, and search for suitable location for diapause (dormancy).

Bumblebees generally visit flowers that form recognizable groups according to
pollinator type. They can visit patches of flowers up to 1–2 kilometers from
their colony. Bumblebees will also tend to visit the same patches of flowers
every day, as long as nectar and pollen continue to be available, a habit known
as pollinator or flower constancy. While foraging, bumblebees can reach ground
speeds of up to 15 metres per second (54 km/h). Once they have collected nectar
and pollen, they return to the nest and deposit the harvested nectar and pollen
into brood cells, or into wax cells for storage. Unlike honey bees, bumblebees
only store a few days’ worth of food and so are much more vulnerable to food
shortage.

Land use

The decline of bumblebee worldwide was brought to light when the impact of
particular land use practices was deemed to require fuller study to pinpoint
those practices that would benefit the survival of the bumblebee [5]. Organic
farming practices increased bumblebee species richness over conventional farming
practices [6].

Scientists warn California could be struck by winter ‘superstorm’

A group of more than 100 scientists and experts say in a new report that California faces the risk of a massive "superstorm" that could flood a quarter of the state's homes and cause $300 billion to $400 billion in damage. Researchers point out that the potential scale of destruction in this storm scenario is four or five times the amount of damage that could be wrought by a major earthquake.

It sounds like the plot of an apocalyptic action movie, but scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey warned federal and state emergency officials that California's geological history shows such "superstorms" have happened in the past, and should be added to the long list of natural disasters to worry about in the Golden State.

The threat of a cataclysmic California storm has been dormant for the past 150 years. Geological Survey director Marcia K. McNutt told the New York Times that a 300-mile stretch of the Central Valley was inundated from 1861-62. The floods were so bad that the state capital had to be moved to San Francisco, and Governor Leland Stanford had to take a rowboat to his own inauguration, the report notes. Even larger storms happened in past centuries, over the dates 212, 440, 603, 1029, 1418, and 1605, according to geological evidence.

The risk is gathering momentum now, scientists say, due to rising temperatures in the atmosphere, which has generally made weather patterns more volatile.

The scientists built a model that showed a storm could last for more than 40 days and dump 10 feet of water on the state. The storm would be goaded on by an "atmospheric river" that would move water "at the same rate as 50 Mississippis discharging water into the Gulf of Mexico," according to the AP. Winds could reach 125 miles per hour, and landslides could compound the damage, the report notes.

Such a superstorm is hypothetical but not improbable, climate researchers warn. "We think this event happens once every 100 or 200 years or so, which puts it in the same category as our big San Andreas earthquakes," Geological Survey scientist Lucy Jones said in a press release.

Solar power tops the list of renewable energies in the world, both in installed
capacity and rate of growth. Solar photovoltaic – generating electricity from
sunlight – has been growing the fastest, driven by technological advances that
bring prices down, as much as by government policies such as feed-in tariffs [1]
(World Reached 25 % Renewable Energy Capacity, SiS 49). But how green is solar
energy? A particular worry is the toxicities of metals such as cadmium that goes
into the new thin film PVs.

The Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition based in San Jose California in the United
States carried out a survey early in 2010 comparing environmental health and
safety practices, recycling policies and sustainability among 14 major solar
panel manufacturers that represent about a quarter of the global solar panels
market share [2, 3]. German companies scored the highest overall: Calyxo,
Solarworld and Sovello; Yingli in China came fourth. US-based First Solar and
Abound Solar followed. There was no response from several major manufacturers
including Sharp, Miasolé, Best Solar and Solyndra.

The survey also found that:

- Half the companies surveyed supported mandatory take-back and recycling at the
end of the solar panels; life, but many need to start setting aside money for
the programmes
- About two-thirds of the companies surveyed failed to perform life-cycle analysis
of their products
- The risk of chemicals used during solar panel manufacture is not assessed by the
majority of responding manufacturers

It is important to perform life-cycle analysis as well as environmental and
health impacts of renewable energy options, and end of life recycling should be
mandatory, especially for toxic components, such as cadmium or cadmium
telluride.

Life cycle analysis

Researchers led by Vasilis Fthenakis at Columbia University, New York, in the
United States, have been carrying out life-cycle analysis of solar panels ([4]
Solar Power Getting Cleaner Fast, SiS 39). In the most recent comprehensive
update, the analysis start from raw material acquisition, through material
processing, manufacturing, use, decommissioning, treatment/disposal and
recycling, if any, accounting for the material and energy inputs, and waste
effluents to air, water or ground [5].

The material and energy inputs and outputs during life cycles of silicon
photovoltaics (Si PVs) and thin-film cadmium telluride (CdTe) PVs were
investigated in detail based on actual measurements from PV production plants
between 2004 and 2006.

They used the most up-to-date data from researchers on life-cycle inventory
(LCI) for producing crystalline silicon modules in Western Europe under the
framework of the Crystal Clear, a large European Integrated Project focusing on
crystalline silicon technology, co-funded by the European Commission and the
participating countries. The LCI data for CdTe thin-film technology were taken
from the production data of First Solar’s plant in Perrysburg, Ohio, United
States.

The typical thickness of multi- and mono-Si PV is 270–300 mm, and that of
ribbon-Si is 300–330 mm; 72 individual cells of 156 cm2 (125 cm x 125 cm)
comprise a module of

1.25 m2 for all Si-PV types. The conversion efficiency of ribbon-, multi-, and
mono-Si module is 11.5, 13.2, and 14.0 percent, respectively. As of 2006, First
Solar’s 25-MWp plant manufactures frameless, double-glass, CdTe modules of 1.2 m
by 0.6 m rated at 9 percent efficiency with ~3mm thick active layer, a hundredth
the thickness of the silicon PVs.

An important part of the solar panel installation that has not been considered
in previous life-cycle analysis is the ‘balance of system’ (BOS), all components
other than the PV panels needed for supporting the panels and for their
operation.

Silicon modules require an aluminium frame of 3.8 kg/m2 for mounting, while a
glass backing performs the same functions for the CdTe PV. For rooftop PV, the
BOS typically includes inverters, mounting structures, cable and connectors.
Large-scale ground-mounted PVs require additional equipment and facilities, such
as grid connections, office facilities, and concrete. The mass of this was 9 to
10 times the panels for a 3.5 MW installation in Springville, AZ.

Energy payback time and greenhouse emissions

The most frequently measured life-cycle metrics of PV system environmental
analyses are the energy payback time (EPBT) and the greenhouse-gas (GHG)
emissions. EPBT is the period required for a renewable energy system to generate
the same amount of energy that we used to produce the system itself. Calculating
the primary energy equivalent requires knowledge of the country-specific fuels,
feedstock and technologies used to generate energy.

The EPBTs are shown in Figure 1. As can be seen, CdTe PVs have the lowest values
by far, one year in Europe and slightly over one year in the US.

The greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions during the lifecycle of a PV system are
estimated as an equivalent of CO2 using an integrated time period of 100 years;
the major emissions included as GHG emissions are CO2 (global warming potential,
GWP = 1), CH4 (GWP = 23), N2O (GWP = 296), and chlorofluorocarbons (GWP =
4600–10 600).

Again, CdTe PVs emissions at 24 g per kWH come out ahead of silicon PVs at 37 gm
per kWh. These are way below those of coal natural gas and petroleum. I have
omitted the GHG emissions of nuclear given in the authors’ graph at 24 g, the
same as CdTe PVs. This value was way below that resulting from a detailed
realistic analysis, which put nuclear GHG emissions at between a minimum of 85 g
and a maximum of 130 g per kWh ([6] The Nuclear Black Hole, SiS 40).

Electricity and fuel use during the PV materials and module production are the
main sources of the GHG emissions for PV lifecycles. Upstream electricity-
generation methods also play an important role in determining the total GHG
emissions. For instance, the GHG emission factor of the average US electricity
grid is 40 percent higher than that of the average Western European (UCTE),
resulting in higher GHG estimates for the US – produced modules. It is clear
that improvements in material and energy use and recycling will enhance the
environmental profiles.

A recent, major improvement is a recycling process for the sawing slurry, the
cutting fluid that is used in the wafer cutting. This recycling process recovers
80–90 percent of the silicon carbide and polyethylene glycol that was previously
wasted, and decreases the EPBTs of these technologies by 10 percent.

Other waste gases were compared. Emissions of NOx and SOx from CdTe PVs at 42
mg/kWh and 79 mg/kWh are about half of those of the silicon modules.

Killings of newborn babies on the rise in Pakistan

KARACHI (AFP) – The lifeless bodies of two tiny babies are being given their final bath before burial in Karachi, after they were left to die in the southern Pakistani city's garbage dumps.

"They can only have been one or two days old," says volunteer worker Mohammad Saleem, pointing at the two small corpses being gently washed by his colleagues at a charity's morgue.

In the conservative Muslim nation, where the birth of children outside of marriage is condemned and adultery is a crime punishable by death under strict interpretations of Islamic law, infanticide is a crime on the rise.

More than 1,000 infants -- most of them girls -- were killed or abandoned to die in Pakistan last year according to conservative estimates by the Edhi Foundation, a charity working to reverse the grim trend.

The infanticide figures are collected only from Pakistan's main cities, leaving out huge swathes of the largely rural nation, and the charity says that in December alone it found 40 dead babies left in garbage dumps and sewers.

The number of dead infants found last year -- 1,210 -- was up from 890 in 2008 and 999 in 2009, says the Edhi Foundation manager in Karachi, Anwar Kazmi.

Tragic tales abound.

Kazmi recounts the discovery of the burnt body of a six-day-old infant who had been strangled. Another child was found on the steps of a mosque having been stoned to death on the orders of an extremist imam who has since disappeared, he says.

"Do not murder, lay them here," reads a sign hanging outside the charity's Karachi base where it has left cradles in the hope that parents will abandon their unwanted children there, instead of leaving them to die.

"People leave these children mostly because they think they are illegitimate, but they are as innocent and loveable as all human beings," says the charity's founder, well-known humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Most children found are less than a week old.

Khair Mohammad, 65, works as a watchman in the charity's vast graveyard in the city outskirts. It is dotted with tiny unnamed graves.

"We acquired this land to bury children after another plot was filled with hundreds of bodies," he says.

The death toll is far worse among girls, says manager Kazmi, with nine out of ten dead babies the charity finds being female.

"The number of infanticides of girls has substantially increased," Kazmi says, a rise attributed to increased poverty across the country.

Girls are seen by many Pakistanis as a greater economic burden as most women are not permitted to work and are considered to be the financial responsibilty of their fathers, and later their husbands.

A Pakistani family can be forced to raise more than one million rupees (11,700 dollars) to marry their daughter off.

Edhi says that up to 200 babies are left in its 400 cradles nationwide each year and that it handles thousands of requests for adoption by childless couples.

Abortion is prohibited in Pakistan, except when the mother's life is at risk from her pregnancy, but advocates say that legalisation would reduce infanticide and save mothers from potentially fatal back-street terminations.

According to Pakistani law, anyone found to have abandoned an infant can be jailed for seven years, while anyone guilty of secretly burying a child can be imprisoned for two years. Murder is punishable with life imprisonment.

But crimes of infanticide are rarely prosecuted.

"The majority of police stations do not register cases of infanticide, let alone launch investigations into them," said lawyer Abdul Rasheed.

Visual Reality Check: Chemtrails vs Contrails

A contrail is a normal occurrence with high altitude aircraft in cold dry air. It is a trail of jet engine exhaust vapors that have become ice particles, forming a very shiny white, narrow trail. This stream dissipates and completely disappears from view shortly. It usually extends no more than 5 to 10 plane lengths behind the aircraft. Contrails' appearance depend on atmospheric conditions, aircraft altitude, and air temperature.

What has been labeled chemtrails are different in appearance and longevity. They may appear from some aircraft while others are not emitting contrails. Although basically white in color, they are not as shiny or brilliant, more of an off white. Sometimes the sunlight passing through them creates different hues. And they appear to be more dense and much longer. They linger long over longer distances, even hours, after the aircraft has passed overhead, usually expanding laterally and becoming much wider than contrails.

So wide in fact that they often merge and become cloud like. If there are enough chemtrails in the sky, the sky becomes hazy. Sometimes these solid chemtrails can be observed slowly falling toward ground level. And this is how air, water, and soil samples for chemical analysis have been collected. Collecting samples at ground levels is impossible with contrails that evaporate at high altitude.

Since the early to mid 1990's in the USA, there have been reports and photographs of unusual chemtrail patterns from various locations throughout the USA and other world wide geographical locations. When official military or government agencies were queried by alert sky watchers, the explanations, if there was even a response, were quite unsatisfactory.

They were usually told that they were seeing contrails and there was no reason for concern. Sometimes they were told they were seeing evidence of Air Force attempts to stem global warming. These unsatisfactory responses led to sincere efforts of individuals to research on their own and network through the Internet.

Chemtrail Content Analysis from Different Sources

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the USA has rejected offers to analyze chemtrail samples from Dr. Len Horowitz, while in Northern Idaho, and researcher Clifford Carnicom of Santa Fe, NM. But they and concerned citizens in Las Vegas, NV, Mt. Shasta, CA, and Eastern Arkansas, all managed to get independent laboratory analysis done on samples from soil, water, and the air.

The results were similar with all of them and have been reported to compare with other analysis from North American and European locations. Barium, Aluminum Oxide, Titanium, Magnesium, and BannEthylene dibromide (dibromethane) or EDB are the essential elements of the chemtrail.

Aerosol Barium saltswere sprayed from planes over Panama, Libya, and during Desert Storm to make people sick and weak. Barium poisoning is worse than lead poisoning. The lungs are affected adversely. Many complaints of colds, flu, even pneumonia occur within a very few days after heavy chemtrail spraying over an area.

Aluminumcauses extreme neurological disorders. Dementia, uncontrollable spasms, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's Disease can be caused by long term aluminum exposure. Breathing in those particulates over time is a definite long term hazard.

EDB or dibromethanewas banned in the USA years ago from use in all auto and jet fuels. But somehow it is appearing again in samples from chemtrail residue. It is a major component of insecticides, which are nerve poisons. It affects the nervous system especially where breathing is involved. And it is very carcinogenic.

Keep in mind that these are in tiny particulate form, enabling them to be breathed into our lungs as well as settling into soil and water. Concerned citizens in several areas where heavy chemtrailing has occurred have observed a decline in water quality and erosion of plant life. Over the past few years in the USA, lung disorders have leaped from eighth to fourth as a cause of health issue fatalities.

There are even more unusual biological anomalies being discovered in chemtrail residues as well, such as desiccated blood cells which come to life along with bacterial or viral specimens. Keeping Our Eyes Wide Shut

Many concerned independent journalists and researchers are concerned with the possibilities of sinister motives that are being hidden deliberately. Why would government health and environmental protection agencies refuse to get involved with citizens' chemtrail concerns? Why are different reasons from military groups created to placate those concerns?

In September of 2007, a major German TV outlet spread the news of a large chemtrail spraying occurrence and asked questions. The station's report included a weather forecaster who had observed strange clouds forming rapidly without the usual necessary climatic conditions. Under pressure of public scrutiny, the military there conceded that indeed they were spraying aerosol particulates. But they claimed it was only part of a war game to disrupt radar.

This reason was used in the States as well. The military called it spraying chaff to disrupt radar. But the U.S. observer who had complained to them noted that the spraying had been going on in his area for years. So how come air traffic control radar had not been affected?

The major mainstream media in the USA has ignored the chemtrail issues. Other than websites of alternative news, it has been only a few local media outlets in the U. S. that have featured stories and concerns regarding chemtrail issues. Local newspapers in the Mt. Shasta, CA area, Las Vegas, NV, and TV station KLAS in Louisiana have presented concerns regarding the hazardous materials found in chemtrail samples in those areas.

The Health Issue Remains

Despite all other issues of whom and why, which are beyond the scope of this article, the health issues remain. Health problems, especially lung and neurological, are constantly on the rise in all the areas being heavily chemtrailed. Of course, there are other factors and other health issues as well. But most of those can be avoided by not eating processed and genetically modified foods sprayed with insecticides. Not breathing is difficult. Even here in Central Mexico, a doctor once mentioned that pneumonia cases had spiked radically during and after a recent heavy chemtrailing period.

The fact that chemtrials persist and no one or no agency is coming clean is baffling, and cause for concern. German Scientist Exposes Chemtrails as Military Operations

The military heads claim that the substances used are not harmful."

Johannes Remmel, German Green party representative states, "The government must provide explanations to the unsuspecting population." While radar is tracking suspicious aircraft, the Germany Military then uses counterfeit satellite imagery to hide their operations.

In Germany, weather manipulation is prohibited, and I would likewise believe that it is prohibited in the U.S. as well.

Since Chemtrails are so widespread, I would rule out the idea that this is just military performing operations to disrupt radar signals as part of some sort of drill.

The forefront of these operations in the United States appears to be the US Navy, as detailed in "Death in the Air: Globalism, Terrorism & Toxic Warfare," by Dr. Len Horowitz. Many government watchdogs claim global depopulation, the targeted reduction of the world's population by two-thirds, is secretly the reason behind chemtrail spraying.

An alternative theory to explain Chemtrails, would be that a new weapon related to controlling the weather is being deployed. By creating droughts and thus famines, large populations could be easily controlled or eliminated. Other countries could be easily controlled and brought to their knees by a global power if the weather could be controlled or altered.

For a while I was confused between chemtrails, and contrails. Contrails are the exhaust of an air craft, it leaves a trail in the sky and the trail rapidly dissipates. With chemtrails, they initially look identical to contrails, but rather than the trail dissipating, the trail expands and then starts to look like a cloud. Over the Silicon Valley where I live, I daily witness these chemtrails starting and stopping from airplanes. In other words, the plane has control over the chemicals it is releasing. Also, I have noticed on some days the area is filled with a gray hazy muck, and the mountains almost disappear. This is highly unusual especially when just one day before, the mountains were totally clear.

Part of the undercurrents, at least in the United States, is the concept being marketing through radio, television and schools, that the earth is overpopulated. The idea of overpopulation, as the cause of our problems, was something that I had believed in for a time.

I believed in that idea until I realized the abundance of nature. Just seeing the amount of food produced by one healthy tree, and the millions of acres of unused land in central California, helped me understand Nature's abundance.

The creator did not put humans on earth to suffer, to starve and to die. The creator of life gave us vast resources from which to be healthy. Humans are grossly misusing earth's delicate resources, and thus we have created an experience of lack and deprivation. The lack we experience is not natural, but a reflection of our disconnection from the source of life.

Every action, thought, and feeling has a cause and an effect. Evil never will win, it cannot. But we all need to work together to bring more awareness to the dreaded reality - that our government seems bent on making this planet a military war zone.

Maybe the Mayans were on to something?

That's surely what students of the famed Mayan 2012 prophecy for the end of the world had to be thinking with the news of recent eerie wildlife die-offs in Arkansas. Just as the calendar nudged a year closer to that fateful date, birds began falling from the sky in Arkansas and a massive fish kill occurred some 125 miles to the west.

Roughly 5,000 red-winged blackbirds fell from the sky over a mile of land near Beebe, a small town in northwest Arkansas, and observers spotted the fish kill near the town of Ozark. You can watch a video report on the blackbirds below, courtesy of ABC News:

No one seems to know just yet what caused the two die-offs. But theories abound.

In a statement Saturday morning, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission quoted staff ornithologist Karen Rowe as saying that such events have happened before around the world: "Test results usually were inconclusive, but the birds showed physical trauma and that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail."

Because it happened New Year's Eve, some officials suggest that revelers shooting fireworks may have spooked the birds, to the point that they died en masse from stress-induced cardiac arrest.

"It is unlikely they were poisoned," Rowe said, "but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin." Tests were to begin Monday.

Meanwhile, wildlife officials say that the estimated 100,000 drum fish discovered by a tugboat captain over a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River appears to be a natural occurrence that isn't tied to the bird kill in any way.

"The fish kill only affected one species of fish," Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission told CNN. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish." He added that fish kills in the area are common, though this one was larger than most.

UPDATE: A state veterinarian tells NBC that preliminary necropsy results from several birds show that they died of "multiple blunt trauma to their vital organs," though what caused the trauma remains uncertain. According to Dr. George Badley, their stomachs were empty, so they weren't poisoned, and they died in midair, not upon impact with the ground.

Biofuels are conservatively estimated to have been responsible for at least 30
percent of the global food price spike in 2008 that pushed 100 million people
into poverty and drove some 30 million more into hunger, according to the
report, Meals per gallon, released by the UK charity ActionAid in February 2010
[1]. The number of chronically hungry people now exceeds one billion.

The report blames the biofuels targets set by the European Union (EU), and
concomitantly, the huge financial incentives given to the biofuels industry,

would receive €13.7 billion per year.

If all global biofuels targets are to be met, food prices could rise by up to an
additional 76 percent by 2020 and starve an extra 600 million people.

Fuel vs food

The main agricultural crops used for industrial biofuels are vegetable and seed
oils such as palm, soy, sunflower, rapeseed, and jatropha for biodiesel, maize,
wheat and sugars for ethanol. Except for jatropha (see later), the feedstock are
all food crops. The most immediate effect of the push for industrial biofuels is
to compete with food for feedstock, thereby inflating food prices. The Food and
Agricultural Organisation estimates that in 2008/9, 125 million tonnes of
cereals were diverted into biofuel production. In 2010, more cereal (1 107
million tonnes) were diverted into animal feed and industrial uses than for
feeding people (1 013 million tonnes). Overall, world food prices increased by
75 percent from 2006 to the middle of 2008, but the price for staple food grains
(such as wheat, rice and maize) went up by 126 percent. For the 82 low income
food deficient countries, import bills shot up. Each 10 percent increase in the
price of cereals adds nearly US$4.5 billion to the total cereals import cost of
developing countries that are net importers. Independent analysts have concluded
that industrial biofuels have been responsible for 30 to 75 percent of the
global food price increase in 2008.

To make matters much worse, huge tracts of land have been taken out of food
production, exacerbating landlessness everywhere (see [2] ‘Land Rush’ as Threats
to Food Security Intensify, SiS 46). ActionAid reports that [1] in just five
African countries 1.1 million hectares have been given over to industrial
biofuels for export; while 1.4 million ha were taken over simultaneously to
produce food for export. As biofuels displace food from agricultural land in
developed countries, and as rich countries run out of water for agriculture,
food production is increasingly outsourced to cheap land available in poor
countries [2].

Food and fuel are competing everywhere for land. EU companies have already
acquired or requested at least five million hectares of land for industrial
biofuels in developing countries [1]. Just to meet the EU’s ten percent target
would require 17.5 million hectares for growing biofuels in developing
countries.

Landlessness and hunger

While driving up food prices can create hunger, driving people off the land that
they have traditionally cultivated deprives them of the last resort of growing
their own food. This is happening all over the developing world.

In Mozambique, farms are destroyed for industrial biofuels. Elisa Alimone
Mongue, mother and farmer said: “I don’t have a farm, I don’t have a garden, ..
the only land I have has been destroyed. We are just suffering with hunger, ..
even if I go to look for another farm, they will just destroy it again.”

“They actually took the land when it was already tilled…They haven’t paid us
anything… What we want is to get our farms back because that is what our
livelihood is dependent on… we are dying of hunger and there is nothing we have
that is actually our own.” Matilde Ngoene, another mother and farmer said.

No cure for mad soy disease

They call it “mad soy disease” in Brazil, where it has been spreading from the north, causing yield losses of up to 40 percent, most notably in the states of Mato Grosso, Tocantins and Goias.

Like its namesake, mad cow disease, it is incurable [1, 2, 3].

This is the latest GMO fiasco to surface since our report on the meltdown in the USA [4] (GM Crops Facing Meltdown in the USA, SiS 46), China [5] (GM-Spin Meltdown in China, SiS 47), and Argentina [6] (Argentina's Roundup Human Tragedy, SiS 48).

Mad soy disease has afflicted soybeans sporadically in the hot northern regions of Brazil in the past years, but is now spreading to more temperate regions in the south “with increased prevalence overall”, according to a US Department of Agriculture scientist.

The disease delays the maturation of infected plants indefinitely; the plants remain green until they eventually rot in the field. The top leaves thin out, and the stems thicken and become deformed. The leaves also darken compared to healthy plants; the pods, when formed, are abnormal with fewer beans.

Researchers have yet to find a cure for the disease, as they are still not sure what causes it. The prime suspect for spreading disease is the black mite found in stubble when soybean is grown in no-till production systems.

According to the USDA Global Agricultural Information Network, Brazil has 24 million ha planted to soybean, 78 percent of which are GM [3]. Apart from mad soy disease, Brazil’s soybean is simultaneously afflicted by soybean Asian rust that first appeared in 2001-2002. Producer groups are requesting the Brazilian Government Agency to speed up approval of more effective fungicide to combat the disease, which would have significant cost implications. But for mad soy disease, no cure is forthcoming. Mato Grosso, which alone produces nearly 30 percent of Brazil’s soybean crop, is among the states that have brought the issue of mad soy disease “to the forefront”.

US scientists identified more than 40 diseases associated with glyphosate and glyphosate-tolerant crops. Disease of GM soybean is no longer a surprise. Senior scientists in the United States, who have studied glyphosate and glyphosate-tolerant GM crops for decades, identified more than 40 diseases linked to glyphosate, and the list is growing [7] (Scientists Reveal Glyphosate Poisons Crops and Soil, SiS 47).

Glyphosate tolerant crops play a pivotal role in causing and spreading diseases, not only to the crops themselves, but also to other crops grown nearby or planted subsequently [8] (Glyphosate Tolerant Crops Bring Diseases and Death, SiS 47).

Chemtrails unveiled

Much suspicion has been aroused by unusual cloud formations and abnormal jet
trails in the upper atmosphere over the past decade. I have personally witnessed
hundreds of days of ‘engineered’' jet trails and clouds, both in the UK and in
Poland. However, it has proved extremely difficult to obtain any information
about the phenomenon from official sources. When challenged, the normal answer
is “nothing unusual is happening.”

This turns out to be very far from the truth. While I concentrate most of this
article on just one recent example of professional research on the topic, there
have been hundreds of both official and unofficial documents exploring and
exposing the military and civil aviation antics responsible for spraying layer
upon layer of toxic aerosol “chemtrails” in the sky above our heads on an almost
daily basis for the past ten years.

These events go unreported by the mainstream media and governments remain
silent. This collusion, whether intentional or otherwise, keeps us in the dark
with regard to a grand geo-engineering experiment that has the effect of
hobbling our health and severely disrupting the natural environment. And we
would have been lost but for the internet.

The Belgium based Belfort Group has brought together more than seven years of
research and fact finding on the activities that have become largely known as
“Chemtrails”. At an international symposium at Delft University of Technology in
Ghent, 29 May 2010, the Belfort Group enlisted Dr Coen Vermeeren, a senior
aeronautics engineer, to address the issue. Vermeeren based his presentation on
a 300 page scientific report entitled [1] “Case Orange: Contrail Science, Its
Impact on Climate and Weather Manipulation Programs Conducted by the United
States and Its Allies.” According to Vermeeren, the authors of the report are “a
group of scientists/inside who have chosen to remain anonymous.”

In his talk, Dr Vemeeren frankly admits to the existence of “persistent
contrails”; he said:

“We also know that chemtrails do exist because we do the spraying; for crops,
for example, and we know that they have been spraying for military purposes. So
chemtrails is not new. We know about it.”

From weather manipulation to geoengineering

The Case Orange report reveals the existence of publicly available material
indicating that various forms of geoengineering have been going on for “at least
60 years.” Early examples include the 'cloud seeding' UK war operations in
Germany during World War Two and the US attempts to dislodge the North
Vietnamese during the Vietnam War. However, these pale into insignificance
compared with the extensive nature of current activities.

Controversy over the potentially detrimental effects of such activities on both
the environment and human health led to 'Environmental Modification' (En Mod)
weaponry being banned under the auspices of “The UN Convention on the
Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification
Techniques” in 1987. It is not clear whether this ban was ever fully enforced.
However, interest in En Mod soon gained prominence when global warming warnings
and accompanying environmental stress issues attracted global scientific
interest [2].

Have you ever wondered why so much earthquakes, floods, forest fires, heat waves and even water shortages in isolated locations have been happening lately?

These crazy weather patterns are not just natural occurrence...

It is obvious, Man has been one of the major culprits behind Global Warming...

However, the solar system is also passing a photon belt... This is where the solar system as a whole will be subjected to a much higher radiation and bombardments caused by photons. This is also known as the age of Aquarius... since we are passing the constellation of Aquarius.

The Mayans have had this in their calendar... it is a cyclical event... normally associated with cataclysmic events.

How do we know?... well... there are no living witness of these since it happens every 26,000 years more or less.

However, evidences have been discovered lately with artifacts and relics depicting or pointing to these events. There are also artifacts that prove the existence of advance technologies in the ancient past... but what happened to them all?

Can those ancient cataclysms be responsible for their obliteration from the face of history?

If this is the case... this means the inevitable would certainly happen whether there is Man made contribution or not. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that we should stop doing something to avert it.

Not if we can help it.

NOWSHERA, Pakistan – The death toll in the massive flooding in Pakistan surged past 800 as floodwaters receded Saturday in the hard-hit northwest, an official said. The damage to roads, bridges and communications networks hindered rescuers, while the threat of disease loomed as some evacuees arrived in camps with fever, diarrhea and skin problems.

Even for a country used to tragedy — especially deadly suicide attacks by Taliban militants — the scale of this past week's flooding has been shocking. Monsoon rains come every year, but rarely with such fury. The devastation came in the wake of the worst-ever plane crash in Pakistan, which killed 152 people in Islamabad on Wednesday.

In neighboring eastern Afghanistan, floods killed 64 people and injured 61 others in the past week, while destroying hundreds of homes and huge stretches of farmland, according to Matin Edrak, director of the Afghan government's disaster department.

As rivers swelled in Pakistan's northwest, people sought ever-shrinking high ground or grasped for trees and fences to avoid getting swept away. Buildings simply crumbled into the raging river in Kalam, a town in the northern part of the Swat Valley, Geo TV showed Saturday.

Reports coming in from districts around the northwest, where such flooding has not been seen since 1929, showed at least 800 people had died, said Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the region's information minister. The U.N. estimated that some 1 million people nationwide were affected by the disaster, though it didn't specify exactly what that meant.

Floodwaters were receding in the region, and many people remain missing, Hussain said.

Over 30,000 Pakistani army troops engaged in rescue and relief work had evacuated 19,000 trapped people by Saturday night, said army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas.

"The level of devastation is so widespread, so large," he said. "It is quite possible that in many areas there is damage, deaths, which may not have been reported."

In the Nowshera area, scores of men, women and children sat on roofs in hopes of air or boat rescues. Many had little more than the clothes on their backs.

"There are very bad conditions," said Amjad Ali, a rescue worker in the area. "They have no water, no food."

A doctor treating evacuees at a small relief camp in Nowshera said some had diarrhea and others had marks appearing on their skin, causing itching. Children and the elderly seemed to have the most problems, Mehmood Jaa said.

"Due to the floodwater, they now have pain in their bodies and they are suffering from fever and cough," Jaa told The Associated Press.

In the town Charsadda, Nabi Gul, who estimated he was around 70, looked at a pile of rubble where his house once stood.

"I built this house with my life's earnings and hard work, and the river has washed it away," he said in a trembling voice. "Now I wonder, will I be able to rebuild it? And in this time, when there are such great price hikes?"

Another resident of Charsadda complained of what he considered a lackluster government response.

"Nobody has offered us for help. We have got no help," said Awal Sher, 60. "Everything is destroyed. Inside, outside — everything is broken."

In eastern Afghanistan, Edrak said floods destroyed about 800 homes and hundreds of acres (hectares) of farm land, damaged hydropower dams and partially destroyed more than 500 other houses. Most of the flooding was in eight provinces, including Kabul, he said.

Rescuers were using army helicopters, heavy trucks and boats to try to reach flood-hit areas. Thousands of homes and roads were destroyed, and at least 45 bridges across the northwest were damaged, the U.N. said.

The American Embassy in Islamabad announced the United States would be providing 12 prefabricated steel bridges to temporarily replace some of the spans damaged by the water. It also is sending rescue boats, water filtration units and some 50,000 meals to be distributed to those in stricken areas, the embassy said in a statement.

Communications networks were sketchy, and the rescue effort was further hampered by the washed-out roads and bridges, said Lutfur Rehman, a government official in the northwest.

"Our priority is to transport flood-affected people to safer places. We are carrying out this rescue operation despite limited resources," he said.

Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, the head of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, said that no more rain was expected in the next few days for the northwest. But Punjab province in the east, Sindh province in the south, and Pakistan's side of the disputed Kashmir region all could expect a lashing over the next three or four days, he said.

Flooding has already affected some of those regions, with more than 20 people dying in Kashmir.

Fuel Cell or not Fuel Cell? That is the question.

Everytime I see a news story either online or on the TV about hydrogen, they always seem to mention fuel cell technology. It's not that I hate fuel cell technology. It's just that there are so many problems as of current, that it isn't a suitable technology for the near future. Maybe in 10 years or so...who knows.

Cost
Let's take the average sedan with 100 horsepower and do some simple math. If you have 100 hp, then that is equal to 74,600 watts. A good internal combustion engine (ICE) runs at about 35% efficiency (average car is about 25%). So, that would mean that the car used 213 kw in fuel just to get its useable power. The average cost for a fuel cell is about $4,500/kilowatt. That would mean that a fuel cell for that average sedan would cost (at 50% eff.) a whopping $475,000! By the end of the decade they hope to be down to $800/kw. Even that would make for an expensive fuel cell costing about $85,000. If they ever make it to $35/kw by 2015 or so, then that would be $3700 per fuel cell.

And platinum is getting more rare and more expensive. There simply isn't enough platinum on the planet to supply all 800 million cars with fuel cells. And platinum will skyrocket in price if fuel cells become more mainstream. Alkaline fuel cells could be used, but they don't work well when carbon monoxide is present. And as a transitional phase to a hydrogen economy, there will still be "regular" cars on the road producing plenty of carbon monoxide. Also, the alkaline fuel cell is far too bulky for cars.

Efficiency
Everyone will tell you that fuel cells are more efficient than internal combustion engines. The fuel cell is often just above 50% efficient. While a typical internal combustion engine (ICE) is about 25%. But here is the rub. If you take a typical ICE and convert it to run off of 100% hydrogen, then you will have to change the timing to about top dead center. Then the efficiency will go up to about 50%. Less power is wasted in heat and less is transfered to the walls of the cylinder. In fact, most will be transfered to the downstroke of the piston. In reality, this efficiency boost isn't always seen as pure horsepower but rather a boost in fuel efficiency.

How long do they last?
Another problem is how long a fuel cell lasts. According to Perdue University, an ICE will last about 5,000 hours while a fuel cell will typically last about 1,000 hours. If you were to drive an hour to work and an hour home and a couple hours on the weekend, then that would be about 12 hours per week. That works out to just over a year and a half before your $100,000 fuel cell is dead. Yeah, that's a bargain. NOT

Pure Hydrogen
To put it simply, the hydrogen going into your $100,000 fuel cell has to be extremely pure. Otherwise, you might damage it.
Alternatives? Meet the ICE engine

Let's face it, switching over to hydrogen is a huge step. We don't really have the infrastructure set up. At $250,000 per fuel cell car, it doesn't seem likely that a large portion of the 800 million cars on the planet will switch over. I don't even see a large portion of wealthy people switching over, especially knowing that a $100,000 fuel cell has to be replaced every couple of years.

But there are some shortcuts we can take. For example, we could use natural gas pipelines to transfer hydrogen across the country. And depleted oil wells could be used as a temporary storage of excess hydrogen.

We could setup hydrogen generators at home that will turn electricity and water into hydrogen. They could also be run with solar and/or windmills.

And since most vehicles on the road these days use internal combustion engines, we could do a cheap conversion on them so they could utilize hydrogen and/or gas. The IC engine will last about twice as long running off straight hydrogen and will need fewer oil changes and tuneups. Imagine 10,000 hours of driving. In the above example, that would be 16 years of nice driving and only changing the oil and spark plugs a few times.

And the upgrade is simple and fairly fast. It involves a carbon fiber tank for storage, a header injection system and a few controls and valves. Something any mechanic can perform. A rough estimate today would be about $1,000 in parts...maybe $1,500. That sure beats a $250,000 car and a $100,000 fuel cell replacement every few years. The government could even offer tax breaks for having a conversion done.

A car properly modified to run off of hydrogen can actually clean the air. The only exhausts from this type of vehicle will be water vapor and a very small amount of nitrous oxides. Although, the nitrous oxides would be about 500 times less than a normal car emits. So, a hydrogen car driving around the city would actually clean the air.

And since you can still run off of regular gasoline, there is no downside. You can even run in hydrogen boost mode. This is when you run off of normal gas and add about 7% or more hydrogen to the mix. This will boost your fuel economy about 30%.

I thought I should post this again for everyone to ponder upon...

I really won't suggest a fixed fin for a typhoon prone area... perhaps lowering it's height by as much as 75% will make it safer to be placed in countries where typhoons or hurricanes are constantly occuring...

A top support with Guy wire cables or steel trusses to keep the top part as firmly supported as the bottom will do the trick.

This system can also be placed on top of vehicles on a small scale so as to make extra electrical energy to supply for the vehicles electrical requirements... which can also be used to generate supplemental fuel like HHO, Hydrogen and Oxygen based on water.
