3 killed, homes damaged in Indonesia quakes

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A series of powerful earthquakes hit Indonesia on Wednesday, killing at least three people, damaging hundreds of homes and triggering a brief tsunami warning that sent residents fleeing to high ground. Rescue officials said the death toll could climb, with several hard-hit remote areas yet to be reached.
The 7.0-magnitude quake struck beneath the ocean floor off the northern coast of Papua province at around noon Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its website. A series of strong aftershocksfollowed, the highest measuring 6.4, adding to the widespread panic.
One of the victims was a 5-month-old baby, crushed by rubble when his family house collapsed on Yapen, an island closest to the epicenter, said Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the National DisasterManagement Agency. A woman also was killed, he said, and several people were hospitalized in critical condition.
More than 500 island homes were damaged, he said, many of them badly.
Sumpeno Yuwono, a top search and rescue official, said if reports from village chiefs were correct, almost all houses in nine yet-to-be-reached villages along Yapen's southern coast also suffered significant damage.
"Some even reported that houses were flattened," he said, as officials rushed to the area. "If this is true, I think there should be many casualties there."
Elsewhere, on the island of Biak, hundreds of people ran out of their homes as the ground started to rumble, said resident Yan Pieter Yarangga. Fearing a tsunami, people fled beaches and some raced for high ground. Many did not head back until long after tsunami warnings were lifted.
When the electricity was cut, some women and children screamed in terror, said Sgt. Junaidi, a local police official, who also goes by one name. "Many were crying, they were so afraid."
The U.S. Geological Survey said the massive quake was centered 18 miles (29 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor and 125 miles (195 kilometers) from Papua.
Several hours earlier, a magnitude-5.3 quake on Sulawesi island, nearly 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) to the west, triggered landslides that seriously damaged at least 50 buildings, including an elementary school, killing one person, said Kardono, the National Disaster Management Agency spokesman.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that make the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity. A giant quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000 people, half of them in Indonesia's westernmost province of Aceh

Taal Volcano could erupt anytime!

A volcano famous for being a tourist attraction in Southern Luzon is becoming active and may eventually erupt, scientists said on Tuesday as they warned tourists to avoid its famous crater.
Taal, located 65 kilometers south of Manila, is one of the most unstable of the country’s 22 known active volcanoes with 33 recorded eruptions, the last one in 1977.

Experts raised the second of a five-level alert on Taal on Tuesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that volcanic quakes in the area have been occurring since April and the crater lake was heating up.

“The recorded high frequency volcanic earthquakes could be the result of active rock fracturing associated with magma intrusion beneath the volcano,” Phivolcs said in a statement.

“Taal Volcano’s status is now raised to alert level 2, meaning that the volcano is undergoing magmatic intrusion which could eventually lead to an eruption,” it added.

Taal’s crater is surrounded by a lake about 15 kilometers off the hill resort of Tagaytay, a major tourist destination.

“Phivolcs reminds the general public that the main crater remains off-limits because hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur, along with the possible build-up of toxic gases,” Phivolcs said.

It added that a trail leading to the crater was “hazardous.”

Buit the lake surrounding the crater prevented deaths in the 1977 and other eruptions, as the body of water has protected outlying areas from the lava.

CADDO GAP, Ark. - At least 16 people were killed while relatives of more than 70 people contacted authorities to say they could be missing after floodwaters tore through a campground packed with vacationing families Friday, carrying away tents and overturning RVs as campers slept.
Heavy rains caused the normally quiet Caddo and Little Missouri rivers to climb out of their banks during the night. The water rose at a rate of up to a foot every seven-and-a-half minutes.
Around dawn, floodwaters barreled through the Albert Pike Recreation Area, a 54-unit campground in the Ouachita National Forest that was packed with vacationing families.

WARSAW (Reuters) - The bodies of two more flood victims have been found in Poland, officials said Friday, bringing the death toll to 18 amid hopes the worst is over after two weeks of surging waters.
Rivers across Poland burst their banks or broke through embankments after heavy rains in mid-May, forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes and doing an estimated 2 billion euros or more in damage.
"The situation should start improving now because high waters are already pouring into the sea, though embankments are very weak after days of inundation," Internal Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Malgorzata Wozniak said.
The government has earmarked 2 billion zlotys for the flood victims and has asked the European Union for help.
Poland's top insurer PZU said Friday that its losses related to the flooding would not exceed 156 million zloty ($47.65 million), because further losses would be covered by its reassurance contracts.
Only two of Poland's 16 regions have escaped damage in flooding, which has also affected nearby Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

As the Sun Awakens, NASA Keeps a Wary Eye on Space Weather

June 4, 2010: Earth and space are about to come into contact in a way that's new to human history. To make preparations, authorities in Washington DC are holding a meeting: The Space Weather Enterprise Forum at the National Press Club on June 8th.

Many technologies of the 21st century are vulnerable to solar storms. [more]
Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division, explains what it's all about:
"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss."
The National Academy of Sciences framed the problem two years ago in a landmark report entitled "Severe Space Weather Events—Societal and Economic Impacts." It noted how people of the 21st-century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. Smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity. A century-class solar storm, the Academy warned, could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina.
Much of the damage can be mitigated if managers know a storm is coming. Putting satellites in 'safe mode' and disconnecting transformers can protect these assets from damaging electrical surges. Preventative action, however, requires accurate forecasting—a job that has been assigned to NOAA.
"Space weather forecasting is still in its infancy, but we're making rapid progress," says Thomas Bogdan, director of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.
Bogdan sees the collaboration between NASA and NOAA as key. "NASA's fleet of heliophysics research spacecraft provides us with up-to-the-minute information about what's happening on the sun. They are an important complement to our own GOES and POES satellites, which focus more on the near-Earth environment."

Among dozens of NASA spacecraft, he notes three of special significance: STEREO, SDO and ACE.
STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) is a pair of spacecraft stationed on opposite sides of the sun with a combined view of 90% of the stellar surface. In the past, active sunspots could hide out on the sun's farside, invisible from Earth, and then suddenly emerge over the limb spitting flares and CMEs. STEREO makes such surprise attacks impossible.
SDO (the Solar Dynamics Observatory) is the newest addition to NASA's fleet. Just launched in February, it is able to photograph solar active regions with unprecedented spectral, temporal and spatial resolution. Researchers can now study eruptions in exquisite detail, raising hopes that they will learn how flares work and how to predict them. SDO also monitors the sun's extreme UV output, which controls the response of Earth's atmosphere to solar variability.

On April 19, 2010, SDO observed one of the most massive eruptions in years. Earth was not in the line of fire ... this time. [full story]
Bogdan's favorite NASA satellite, however, is an old one: the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) launched in 1997. "Where would we be without it?" he wonders. ACE is a solar wind monitor. It sits upstream between the sun and Earth, detecting solar wind gusts, billion-ton CMEs, and radiation storms as much as 30 minutes before they hit our planet.
"ACE is our best early warning system," says Bogdan. "It allows us to notify utility and satellite operators when a storm is about to hit.”
NASA spacecraft were not originally intended for operational forecasting—"but it turns out that our data have practical economic and civil uses," notes Fisher. "This is a good example of space science supporting modern society."
2010 marks the 4th year in a row that policymakers, researchers, legislators and reporters have gathered in Washington DC to share ideas about space weather. This year, forum organizers plan to sharpen the focus on critical infrastructure protection. The ultimate goal is to improve the nation’s ability to prepare, mitigate, and respond to potentially devastating space weather events.
"I believe we're on the threshold of a new era in which space weather can be as influential in our daily lives as ordinary terrestrial weather." Fisher concludes. "We take this very seriously indeed."

MY COMMENT:

Reflecting back in time... I remember as a child during the 70's... People were fearing Oil Crisis... that Oil reserves are about to be depleted and the world easily embraced new Smaller Compact Cars... Was the oil reserve really depleting?...

In the 80's, media was warning people to practice responsible parenthood or family planning... the scare was about the problems brought about by Overpopulation... that poverty and diseases were brought about by over-population, there were even scare propaganda that the whole world will suffer from being overpopulated. .. Fact is: Most of the world population are getting older specially in the first worlds... most lands in the third worlds are uninhabited...

In the 90's... up to the 20's... H1N1, SARS, Terrorism, AIDS, ANTRAX and all types of epidemic, pandemic scares ...were the content of media in all forms... All for the purpose of vaccinating everyone on a without resistance.

I grew up learning from history and to discern things as they happen... and see how these issues continue it's life after they started. Most of the times... these issues appear to be bloated up or  hyped in order to make business profitable for the "you know who".

We haven't been able to recover from Climate Change when the BP-Oil Disaster appeared... and now this!... We truly are living in a very dramatic phase of time.

All the more reason why we should look into living "Off the grid!"... rely less on electronic equipments, fossil fuel, vehicles... All the more reason why we should all be living more aware of the environment and be more caring for our planet as a way of life.

Before you enter your cars... please consider the planet.
