Magnitude 6.0 quake strikes in southern Philippines

Monday May 31, 2010

MANILA (Reuters) - A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck 44 km (28 miles) southwest of Cotabato on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, the U.S. Geological Survey said on Monday.

The quake struck at 1016 GMT, and was centred at a depth of 33 km, the USGS said.
"It's quite strong that normally can cause some damage to old structures, but it was so deep that we don't expect it to cause any damage," said Henry Penarubias, a seismologist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
"We don't expect it to generate any tsunami."
Penarubias gave different figures from those of the USGS, saying the quake happened at a depth of 66 km and had a magnitude of 5.9. He said the quake occurred near the coast south of Cotabato City.
