COTABATO CITY, June 1 – A 12-year-old child was hit by stray bullets when local residents fired gunshots in the air at the height of Magnitude 6 earthquake that hit Central Mindanao region Monday night.
The child, whose identity was withheld, was inside his home when the earthquake triggered by earth layer's movement at the Moro gulf struck at 6:16 p.m.
No immediate report on damages to properties, according to government seismologist Ranier Amilbahar of the Phivolcs-Cotabato Station.
Seismologist said the epicenter was traced 45 kilometers west of Cotabato City and 33 kilometers deep. No reported tidal wave or tsunami was monitored after the tremor.
Residents who are armed fired their guns on the air on the belief that it will drive away bad spirits which brought the earthquake.
It has been a tradition among Moro people to fire their guns on the air whenever there are earthquake and major disasters to drive away bad spirits.
A mild aftershock was reported at 9:30 p.m.
Following the earthquake was a heavy downpour in Cotabato City and its environs which flooded 22 of the city's 37 villages.
Clogged drainage canals and waterways triggered the flash floods that hit low-lying villages of the city.
It was worsened by the coming of sea water along Rio Grande de Mindanao and Tamontaka river due to high tide. (PNA) FFC/NYP/EOF
